Who is Vin Diesel?

BIOGRAPHY

Vin Diesel — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At seven years old, Vin Diesel broke into a New York theater with friends. A woman intercepted them and offered scripts and money if they attended daily. That encounter led him into the repertory company run by his adoptive father Irving H. Vincent, an acting instructor and theatre manager. Born Mark Sinclair on July 18, 1967, in Alameda County, California, alongside fraternal twin brother Paul Vincent, Diesel was raised by mother Delora Sherleen, an astrologer and psychologist, and adoptive father Irving, in an artists’ housing project in Greenwich Village. He later attended Hunter College as an English major but dropped out after three years to pursue acting. During his teens, he worked as a bouncer at New York clubs and performed breakdancing in an instructional video.

Career

After Multi-Facial 1995 screened at Cannes, Steven Spielberg called, leading to a role in Saving Private Ryan 1998. Diesel then voiced the title role in The Iron Giant 1999 and landed his first lead as Richard B. Riddick in Pitch Black 2000. His breakthrough arrived with The Fast and the Furious 2001, playing Dominic Toretto. He headlined blockbusters including xXx 2002, The Pacifier 2005, and multiple Fast & Furious sequels such as Fast Five 2011 and Furious 7 2015. In 2014, he voiced Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, a role he reprised in Avengers: Infinity War 2018 and Avengers: Endgame 2019. He also directed and produced, founding Tigon Studios in 2002.

Personal life

Diesel has been in a long-term relationship with Paloma Jiménez since at least 2007. The couple has three children: daughter Hania Riley born 2008, son Vincent Sinclair born 2010, and daughter Pauline named after his late friend Paul Walker. He also has a fraternal twin brother, Paul Vincent, a film editor, and a younger sister, Samantha Vincent. Diesel’s children refer to his Fast & Furious co-star Michelle Rodriguez as their aunt, as he has remained close with her. He walked goddaughter Meadow Walker down the aisle at her wedding.

Legacy

Vin Diesel received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013, with Paul Walker and Michelle Rodriguez in attendance. His role as Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise, which earned billions worldwide, made him a global star. He also voiced Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Guardians of the Galaxy 2014. Beyond acting, he funded his own short film Multi-Facial 1995 and credits the book Feature Filmmaking at Used Car Prices as his guide. He inspired independent filmmakers by financing his own project early in his career.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
