BIOGRAPHY

Robert F. Kennedy — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

The third son of Joseph P. and Rose Kennedy, Robert Francis Kennedy was born on November 20, 1925, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He attended Milton Academy before studying government at Harvard College, graduating in 1948. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he earned a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1951.

His father’s ambitions and older brother John’s career shaped Kennedy. He completed his father’s challenge to abstain from drinking and smoking until age 21, the only Kennedy son to do so.

Career

Robert F. Kennedy served as U.S. Attorney General from 1961 to 1964 under President John F. Kennedy, focusing on civil rights and organized crime. He advised during the Cuban Missile Crisis, initially favoring a full-scale invasion of Cuba. After his brother’s assassination, he resigned in 1964 to run for the U.S. Senate from New York, narrowly winning despite accusations of being a carpetbagger. He served as senator from 1965 until his death.

Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign emphasized his opposition to the Vietnam War and appealed to working-class and minority voters. He won the California primary on June 4, 1968, but an assassin shot him at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles shortly after his victory speech.

Personal life

Robert F. Kennedy married Ethel Skakel on June 17, 1950. They had 11 children: Kathleen, Joseph, Robert Jr., David, Courtney, Michael, Kerry, Christopher, Max, Douglas, and Rory. Ethel was three months pregnant with Rory when an assassin killed Robert. He had robust health and loved hiking and kayaking.

Among his friends were actors Warren Beatty and Robert Vaughn. He once engaged in a sonnet-quoting contest with Richard Burton. He harbored strong disdain for Lyndon B. Johnson, a sentiment Johnson reciprocated.

Legacy

Robert F. Kennedy’s legacy includes his civil rights work and his concept for the RICO Act of 1970, which has been used against organized crime. He received the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. His assassination spurred gun control advocacy from friends like Warren Beatty.

Many see Kennedy as a symbol of hope and change. He and Huey Long are the only two sitting U.S. senators assassinated. His grave at Arlington National Cemetery lies about 100 yards from his brother John’s grave. A 15-cent U.S. commemorative stamp honoring him appeared on January 12, 1979.
