Who is Ryan Reynolds?

BIOGRAPHY

Ryan Reynolds — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Ryan Reynolds was born on October 23, 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the youngest of four boys. His father James Chester Reynolds worked as a food wholesaler, and his mother Tammy Lee Stewart was a retail saleswoman. He has Irish and Scottish ancestry. Reynolds attended Kitsilano Secondary School and Prince of Wales Secondary School, and later Kwantlen Polytechnic University before leaving to pursue acting. He failed his high school drama class due to non-attendance. From age 6 to 16 he played soccer with ambition but realized he would not become a professional athlete.

Career

Reynolds began his career on the Nickelodeon series Fifteen 1990. After the show ended, he moved to Los Angeles with actor Chris William Martin in 1997 and landed the role of Berg on Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place 1998 after the show was retooled. He later played Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity 2004 and gained 25 pounds of muscle for the role. In 2005 he starred in The Amityville Horror remake. His portrayal of Deadpool in the 2016 film Deadpool became a defining role; he had been a fan of the character since finding a comic where Deadpool compared himself to a cross between Reynolds and a Shar-Pei. He also starred in Green Lantern 2011, which he did not enjoy working on, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2009. In 2020 he co-owned the Welsh football club Wrexham with Rob McElhenney.

Personal life

Reynolds was engaged to Canadian singer Alanis Morissette from 2004 to 2006. He married actress Scarlett Johansson on September 27, 2008 in a private Canadian ceremony; they divorced in 2011. On September 9, 2012 he married actress Blake Lively. They have three daughters and a son: James born 2014, Inez born 2016, Betty born 2019, and Olin born 2023. Taylor Swift is godmother to James. The family lives in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. Reynolds has a fear of flying after a skydiving accident where his parachute failed to open.

Legacy

Reynolds received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016 and was named to Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list with a tribute by Helen Mirren. He was awarded the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award and became an Officer of the Order of Canada. As one of the few actors to star in both Marvel and DC comic book films, his portrayal of Deadpool redefined the superhero genre. He also co-owns Wrexham AFC, bringing international attention to the Welsh club. He is remembered as a versatile actor, producer, and entrepreneur who turned personal passion into professional success.

A wall of memorable lines from Ryan Reynolds — lyrics, interviews, and off-the-cuff remarks captured over a lifetime.

  • Acting Has Given Me a Way to Channel My Angst. I Feel Like an Overweight, Pimply Faced Kid a Lot of the Time – and Finding a Way to Access That Insecurity, and Put It Toward Something Creative Is Incredibly Rewarding. I Feel Very Lucky.

  • I Never Took Acting Classes, but I Knew I Could Do It Based on the Skill with Which I Lied to My Parents on a Regular Basis!

  • I’m Not a Hockey Fan, Which Is Probably Why I Had to Leave Canada in the First Place.

  • I Did Two Trips in 2006. I Did One Through New Zealand on a Motorcycle, and I Tried to Cross Australia on a Motorcycle from One End of the Continent to the Other. My Friend and I Did Not Make It, Unfortunately – He Crashed, and We Had to Find a Hospital.

  • I Have a Discipline That Has Served Me Very Well in My Career and in My Personal Life… and That’s Gotten Stronger as I’ve Gotten Older. I’ve Always Felt If I Don’t Just Have a Natural Knack for It, I Will Just Out-discipline the Competition If I Have to – Work Harder Than Anybody Else.

  • When I Was a Little Kid – Maybe Nine or Ten – I Was a Complete Asshole. I Would Run Around the Neighborhood on Halloween Throwing Firecrackers in People’s Mailboxes, at Their Houses, and Things Like That. We Were Just These Little Hell Raisers. I’m Sure I Have a Lot to Atone For, If There Is a Judgment Day. It’s Gonna Be a Long List for Me. It Goes Right up Until I Was About 18 and Then I Sort of Straightened Out.

  • For Every Character I Play, There’s Ten Others I’ve Read That Went to Another Actor Because He’s Better Qualified for the Role, or for Whatever Reason, Who Knows – It’s Always a Very Mercurial Process.

  • As an Actor, You’re Always Kind of Cognizant That You’ll Never Work Again. You Always Have This Lizard-brain Fear, Always, Just Under the Surface, That This Is It. Because You See It. I’ve Been Fortunate Enough to Have a 23-Year Career so Far. I’ve Watched People Come and Go and Vanish. I’ve Watched Really Talented People Never Get That Invaluable Foothold into the Industry. so You’re Always Walking That Tightrope of Being Very Grateful That You’re in This Position.

  • I’m Terrified That I’m Genetically Predisposed to Only Having Boys. That’s Frightening. by the Time I Was 10 Years Old, and I’m Not Exaggerating, I Knew How to Patch Drywall.

  • I Think Every Relationship Is Going to Go Through a Few Rough Patches. Those Are What Make It Stronger, I Think.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
