Karen Blixen.

Karen Christentze Dinesen was born on 17 April 1885 in Rungsted, Denmark to parents Ingeborg and Wilhelm Dinesen. Her father was a writer and army officer, and her mother came from a wealthy merchant family. She grew up with her siblings Thomas Dinesen and Ellen Dahl in a cultured environment that fostered her literary interests.

Karen Blixen made her literary debut in 1907 with short stories under the pseudonym Osceola, but her breakthrough came with the publication of Seven Gothic Tales in 1934 under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Her most famous work, Out of Africa, was published in 1937 and recounts her years managing a coffee plantation in Kenya. The book was adapted into a 1985 film starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. Blixen also wrote Babette’s Feast in 1950, which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film in 1987. She received the Holberg Medal in 1949 and the Danish Critics Prize for Literature in 1962.

Karen Blixen married Swedish baron Bror Frederik von Blixen Finecke on 14 January 1914. The couple moved to British East Africa now Kenya to run a coffee plantation. Their marriage ended in divorce in January 1925. Blixen later returned to Denmark and lived at the family estate in Rungstedlund.

Karen Blixen’s memoir Out of Africa, published in 1937, has inspired readers and was adapted into a 1985 film that won seven Academy Awards. Her short story Babette’s Feast, from 1950, won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film in 1987. Blixen received the Holberg Medal in 1949, the Tagea Brandt Rejselegat, and the Ingenio et arti. She remains a significant figure in Danish literature.
