Tom Hanks became only the second actor to win back-to-back Best Actor Oscars, for Philadelphia 1993 and Forrest Gump 1994. His career began with a lead role in the 1984 comedy Splash and was cemented by Big 1988, which earned his first Oscar nomination. He ranks as the third highest-grossing actor in US history as of 2016, with films grossing over $4.3 billion. Hanks received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2014.
