Working as an editor for a Vermont newspaper, Mel Ferrer wrote a children’s book, Tito’s Hats, before turning to acting. He was born Melchior Gaston Ferrer on August 25, 1917, in Elberon, New Jersey, to Cuban-born surgeon Dr. José Maria Ferrer and Manhattan socialite Mary Matilda Irene O’Donohue. He attended Canterbury School and Princeton University but left to pursue editorial work. From age 15 he performed in summer stock. After a bout with polio, he started in radio as a disc jockey in Texas and Arkansas, eventually becoming a producer-director for NBC in New York.

Ferrer made his screen acting debut in Lost Boundaries 1949. He played the lame puppeteer in Lili 1953 and Prince Andrei in War and Peace 1956. He directed Claudette Colbert in The Secret Fury 1950 and Audrey Hepburn in Green Mansions 1959. Ferrer produced the hit Wait Until Dark 1967, also with Hepburn. After his separation from Hepburn, he continued producing and acting mainly in Europe. In 1947, he co-founded the La Jolla Playhouse with Dorothy McGuire and Gregory Peck.

Personal life

Ferrer married four times. Frances Gunby Pilchard became his first wife in 1937; they divorced and remarried in 1947. Barbara Channing Tripp followed in 1942, with whom he had children. In 1954, he wed actress Audrey Hepburn, and they had a son, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, before divorcing in 1968. His final marriage was to Elisabeth Soukhotine in 1971. Prior to that, he had a scandalous relationship with interior designer Tessa Kennedy.
