Who is Adele?

BIOGRAPHY

Adele — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At age 15, Adele had an awakening when she discovered Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald records at a local shop, which inspired her to pursue a music career. Raised in Tottenham, London, by her mother Penny, Adele had no musical heritage in the family: Chart music was all I ever knew, she later said. She attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, counting Amy Winehouse as an alum. A demo posted on MySpace caught the attention of XL Recordings, leading to her signing in 2006.

Career

Adele’s debut album 19, released in 2008, featured the hit Chasing Pavements and won her the Grammy for Best New Artist. Her 2008 appearance on Saturday Night Live pushed the album to No. 1 on iTunes. Her sophomore album 21 2011 was a monster hit, selling 352,000 copies in its first week and staying at No. 1 for 11 weeks, breaking Madonna’s record. Singles like Rolling in the Deep and Someone Like You became anthems. After becoming a mother in 2012, Adele returned with 25 in 2015, whose lead single Hello broke Vevo records. The album sold 3.38 million copies in its first US week, beating ‘NSync’s record. In 2017, she won five Grammys for 25, including Album of the Year.

Personal life

Adele has one son, Angelo James Konecki, born in October 2012 with her then-husband Simon Konecki. She filed for divorce in 2019 after two years of marriage. She has spoken about her fear of flying and sailing, and has undergone throat surgery in 2011 for a hemorrhaged vocal cord. Adele resides in Los Angeles, living opposite her ex-husband to share custody of their son.

Legacy

Record-breaking sales and critical acclaim define Adele’s influence. She is the only artist besides The Beatles and 50 Cent to have two Top 5 singles and two Top 5 albums in the same week. She was appointed MBE in 2013. Her album 21 became the first to top the Billboard 200 two years in a row since Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Adele has been named to the Time 100 list three times 2012, 2016, 2022. She is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with a distinctive voice and emotional depth.

Senior Copy Editor & Editorial Fact Reviewer

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
