BIOGRAPHY

Anne Heche — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Anne Heche was the youngest of five children born to Nancy and Donald Heche in Aurora, Ohio on May 25, 1969. Her family moved 11 times before she turned 12, fostering a transient childhood. She attended Ocean City High School in New Jersey and later Francis W. Parker School in Chicago, Illinois.

Her father Donald died when she was young, and her mother Nancy was a devout Christian who later claimed she prayed to cure her daughter’s lesbianism. Her sister Susan Bergman wrote a book titled Anonymity: The Secret Life of an American Family 1994 about their family dynamics.

Career

Her breakthrough came in 1991 when she joined the cast of Another World playing dual roles as Vicky Hudson and Marley Love. She won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series in 1991 and two Soap Opera Digest Awards.

In 1997, she moved to film with supporting roles in Donnie Brasco opposite Johnny Depp, the disaster film Volcano, and the slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer. The following year she starred opposite Harrison Ford in the action comedy Six Days Seven Nights and appeared in the drama-thriller Return to Paradise 1998. She later returned to television with a recurring role on Everwood 2002 as Amanda Hayes, and starred in the series Men in Trees 2006 and Hung 2009. She also voiced Suyin Beifong in The Legend of Korra 2012.

In 2004, she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for the revival of Twentieth Century. She also wrote an autobiography, Call Me Crazy 2001, and co-hosted a SiriusXM radio show titled Love and Heche with Jason Ellis.

Personal life

She began a publicized relationship with comedian Ellen DeGeneres in 1997 after meeting her at Morton’s Steakhouse in West Hollywood on March 23, 1997. They split on August 16, 2000. She later said she believed going public so early damaged her career.

In September 2001, she married cameraman Coleman Laffoon, and they had a son, Homer Heche Laffoon, in March 2002. They divorced in 2009. That same year, she gave birth to a second son, Atlas Heche Tupper, with then-boyfriend James Tupper. She and Tupper split after 11 years together. She later lived with actor Thomas Jane from 2019 to 2021.

She openly discussed her mental health struggles, including using LSD therapy. In a 2001 interview with Barbara Walters, she revealed an alter ego named Celestia. After a series of personal and financial troubles, she died on August 11, 2022 from injuries sustained in a car accident in Los Angeles.

Legacy

Anne Heche broke ground as an openly bisexual actress in Hollywood, though she felt her decision to publicly date Ellen DeGeneres in 1997 hindered her career. Her performances across soap operas, blockbuster films, and television demonstrated her versatility.

She received the GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her LGBTQ advocacy. Posthumously, two of her films—13 Minutes and Supercell, both about tornadic weather—were released in 2022. She is remembered for her honesty about her personal life and her Emmy-winning work on Another World.
