BIOGRAPHY

Anthony Hopkins — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

On December 31, 1937, Muriel Anne Hopkins and baker Richard Arthur Hopkins had a son, Anthony, in Margam, Port Talbot, Wales. As an only child, he was called George by his grandfather and Charlie by his father. His early ambition was to be a concert pianist, and he later served in the British Army’s Royal Artillery as part of National Service.

Inspired by Richard Burton, Hopkins decided to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, graduating in 1957. He then attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1961 to 1963, where his fellow students included John Hurt and Ian McShane.

Career

Hopkins moved to London in 1965 and joined the National Theatre, invited by Laurence Olivier. He made his television film debut in A Flea in Her Ear 1967 and appeared in The Lion in Winter 1968 with Timothy Dalton. His breakthrough came with The Silence of the Lambs 1991, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, the BAFTA, and numerous critics’ awards. His performance as Hannibal Lecter was ranked #1 on AFI’s villains list.

In the 1990s, Hopkins starred in acclaimed films such as Howards End 1992, The Remains of the Day 1993, Nixon 1995, Amistad 1997, and The Mask of Zorro 1998. He received Oscar nominations for The Remains of the Day, Nixon, and Amistad. In 2020, he won his second Best Actor Oscar for The Father, becoming the oldest winner in the category at age 83.

Personal life

Hopkins has been married three times: first to Petronella Barker from 1967 to 1972, then to Jennifer Lynton from 1973 to 2002, and finally to Stella Hopkins since 2003. He has one daughter, Abigail Hopkins, from his first marriage. He conquered his alcoholic addiction in 1975 and quit smoking using the Allen Carr method.

Hopkins became a U.S. citizen in 2000 but retains his British knighthood. He is an accomplished painter and pianist, and composed a waltz titled And the Waltz Goes On, which was premiered by André Rieu in 2011. He was diagnosed with Asperger’s later in life.

Legacy

Anthony Hopkins’s portrayal of Hannibal Lecter is #1 on the American Film Institute’s villains list. The AFI ranked it as the top villain of all time. He was knighted in 1993 and received the Academy Fellowship Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, and the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award. His later Oscar for The Father at age 83 set a record for the oldest Best Actor winner.

Beyond acting, Hopkins has taught at the Ruskins School of Acting in Santa Monica and pledged $1.6 million to preserve Mount Snowdon in Wales. He brought historical figures to life, from Richard Nixon to Alfred Hitchcock.
