BIOGRAPHY

Billie Eilish — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Billie Eilish was born on December 18, 2001, in Los Angeles, California, to actress Maggie Baird and musician Patrick O’Connell. She grew up in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, raised vegetarian and later vegan. At age 8, she joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, where she developed her vocal skills. Her older brother Finneas O’Connell, already writing and producing songs, sparked her interest in songwriting at age 11. Her family encouraged creativity: her mother taught improv to Melissa McCarthy, who later became a huge fan of Eilish.

Career

Billie Eilish broke through in 2015 with the single Ocean Eyes, written and produced by her brother Finneas. Her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? released in 2019, spawned the massive hit Bad Guy and made her the first artist born in the 21st century to top the Billboard 200. At the 2020 Grammy Awards, she swept the four main categories — Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year — becoming the youngest artist and first woman to do so in the same year. In 2021, she co-wrote and performed the James Bond theme No Time to Die, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song. She won a second Oscar in 2024 for What Was I Made For? from the film Barbie, making her the youngest two-time Oscar winner at age 22. Beyond her Oscar wins, she has performed at the Academy Awards, Democratic National Convention, and headlined major festivals.

Personal life

Billie Eilish has synesthesia, which allows her to see music as colors, a condition that influences her music videos. She has been open about having ADHD and Tourette’s syndrome since childhood. From October 2022 to May 2023, she was in a relationship with singer Jesse James Rutherford; the couple separated amicably. She is an advocate for animal rights and veganism, and she often wears baggy clothing to avoid being sexualized. She has said she is attracted to both men and women. Her mother, Maggie Baird, taught improv to actress Melissa McCarthy, who later became a huge fan of Eilish.

Legacy

Billie Eilish has redefined pop stardom with her genre-blending music, distinctive style, and outspoken authenticity. She became the first person born in the 21st century to win an Academy Award and the first to win multiple Oscars. Her record of sweeping the four main Grammy categories in 2020 remains unmatched for her age. She has been named to the Time 100 and BBC 100 Women lists and uses her platform to advocate for voting rights, climate action, and ceasefire in Palestine. She proved that a teenager with a laptop and a dream could conquer the global music industry, a fearlessness that defines her legacy.
