Early life

Brian Douglas Wilson was born on June 20, 1942 in Inglewood, California, to parents Audree and Murry Wilson. His father was physically and psychologically abusive, but Brian found escape in music. He listened to records by The Four Freshmen and discovered his talent for arranging harmonies. With his younger brothers Dennis and Carl, and cousin Mike Love, he formed The Beach Boys, releasing their first song Surfin’ in 1961.

Career

In 1964, Brian Wilson quit touring with The Beach Boys to focus on writing and producing. That year he wrote Don’t Worry Baby for Ronnie Spector. In 1965, he released Beach Boys Today! and Summer Days And Summer Nights!!. His masterpiece Pet Sounds arrived in 1966, showcasing innovative harmonies and arrangements. The follow-up SMiLE was abandoned until 2004. Later works like That Lucky Old Sun 2008 and Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin 2010 were critically acclaimed.

Personal life

Brian Wilson married Marilyn Rovell in 1964; they had two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, before divorcing in 1981. In 1995 he married Melinda Ledbetter, and they adopted five children: Daria Rose, Delanie Rae, Dylan, Dash Tristan, and Dakota Rose. Wilson had a long struggle with mental health and substance abuse, and was under the controversial care of Dr. Eugene Landy in the 1980s.

Legacy

Brian Wilson’s innovative use of the recording studio and complex harmonies on Pet Sounds influenced generations of musicians. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and received Kennedy Center Honors in 2007. His songs have been featured in films like Forrest Gump and 50 First Dates. He is remembered as one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century.
