Who is Charlie Sheen?

BIOGRAPHY

Charlie Sheen — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Carlos Irwin Estevez entered the world on September 3, 1965, in New York City as the son of actor Martin Sheen and former art student Janet Sheen. At age nine, he appeared in The Execution of Private Slovik 1974, and in 1977 he was in the Philippines when his father suffered a near-fatal heart attack on the set of Apocalypse Now 1979. While attending Santa Monica High School, Sheen starred on the baseball team as a pitcher with a 40-15 record, alongside friends Rob Lowe and Sean Penn. Despite his athletic success, he was expelled just weeks before graduation due to poor attendance and grades.

Career

His first major role came in 1984 as a high school student in Red Dawn. The pivotal moment arrived in 1986 when he played a young soldier in Oliver Stone’s Platoon, earning critical acclaim. He reunited with Stone for Wall Street 1987 alongside his father, and followed with hits like Young Guns 1988, Major League 1989, and Hot Shots! 1991. After a series of box office flops in the mid-1990s, Sheen revived his career by replacing Michael J. Fox on Spin City in 2000. In 2003, he landed the lead role of Charlie Harper on Two and a Half Men, becoming the highest-paid actor on primetime television at $2 million per episode before his termination in 2011.

Personal life

Charlie Sheen married three times: Donna Peele in 1995, Denise Richards in 2002, and Brooke Mueller in 2008. He has five children: Cassandra Jade Estevez with ex-girlfriend Paula Profit, Sami Sheen born 2004 and Lola Rose Sheen born 2005 with Richards, and twins Bob and Max Sheen with Mueller. In 1998, he suffered a near-fatal cocaine overdose and was hospitalized, leading to multiple rehab stints. He revealed his HIV-positive status on live television in November 2015, stating he was diagnosed four years earlier.

Legacy

Sheen set a record as the highest-paid comedy star on television, earning $2 million per episode on Two and a Half Men. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994 and a Golden Globe Award. In 2011, he set a Guinness World Record for fastest time to reach 1 million followers on Twitter. Despite his controversial public life, his performances in Platoon and Two and a Half Men remain defining roles of his career.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
