Who is Christina Aguilera?

BIOGRAPHY

Christina Aguilera — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Christina María Aguilera was born December 18, 1980 in Staten Island, New York, to musician Shelly Loraine Fidler Kearns and U.S. Army sergeant Fausto Xavier Aguilera. Her father is Ecuadorian; her mother has mixed European ancestry. Her parents divorced when she was six, and she moved frequently with her mother, often living in the Pittsburgh area. At age eight, she performed the national anthem at a Pittsburgh sporting event, the youngest person to do so at the time. By twelve, she was cast in The All New Mickey Mouse Club, where she performed alongside Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Ryan Gosling, solidifying her ambition to become a singer.

Career

In 1999, Aguilera released her debut single Genie in a Bottle, which went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her self-titled debut album won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2000. She quickly followed with the Spanish-language album Mi Reflejo 2000, which won a Latin Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. In 2002, she released Stripped, featuring Beautiful, which won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2004. That same year, her collaboration Lady Marmalade with Lil’ Kim, Mya, and P!nk from the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration. She later released Back to Basics 2006 and served as a coach on The Voice from 2011 to 2016. In 2010, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal life

Aguilera married music executive Jordan Bratman on November 19, 2005; the couple divorced in 2011. They have a son, Max Bratman, born on January 12, 2008. She became engaged to Matthew Rutler on Valentine’s Day 2014, and their daughter, Summer Rain Rutler, was born on August 16, 2014. She was close friends with actress Brittany Murphy until Murphy’s death from pneumonia in December 2009. Aguilera has been open about her difficult childhood, including her father’s absence, and has dedicated herself to charitable causes, donating $200,000 to a domestic abuse shelter in Pittsburgh in 2003.

Legacy

Christina Aguilera defined pop music with her powerful vocal range and willingness to address provocative themes. She inspired artists including Kelly Clarkson, for whom she co-wrote the hit Miss Independent. Her music video for Dirrty 2002 became one of the most played videos of all time, as reported by Rolling Stone. She has won five Grammy Awards, a Latin Grammy, and was named Glamour’s Woman of the Year in 2004. In 2010, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2022 she was honored as a Disney Legend. Fans and critics have called her the Voice of a Generation, a title reflecting her enduring influence on both pop and Latin music.
