Emily Brontë’s mother died in 1821 when Emily was three, and she grew extremely close to her younger sister Anne. She was born in 1818 in Thornton, West Yorkshire, to Maria Branwell and Patrick Brontë. Together with siblings Charlotte and Branwell, they created the imaginary kingdoms of Angria and Gondal, which fueled their childhood writings.

Emily Brontë contributed poems to the 1846 collection Poems, published jointly with her sisters Charlotte and Anne under pseudonyms. Her sole novel, Wuthering Heights, appeared in 1847, again under the male name Ellis Bell. Although it did not achieve immediate success like Charlotte’s Jane Eyre, it was later recognized as a masterpiece of English literature.

Emily was reclusive and had few friends outside her family. She was especially close to her sister Anne, with whom she invented the kingdom of Gondal. Her brother Branwell’s death in September 1848 deeply affected her; she caught a cold at his funeral that developed into tuberculosis. She died on December 19, 1848, at the family parsonage in Haworth.

Wuthering Heights has endured as one of the most powerful novels in English literature, admired for its intense emotion and complex characters. Emily’s work influenced countless writers and has been adapted into films, television series, and operas. She remains remembered for this single, groundbreaking novel.
