After Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911, Shackleton planned the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917 to cross Antarctica. The Endurance became trapped in pack ice and was crushed; the crew escaped by camping on sea ice and then rowed lifeboats to Elephant Island and later to South Georgia, a 720 nautical mile journey that became his most famous exploit.

Shackleton was a polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic and was a principal figure in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. He never reached the South Pole.

Shackleton received the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society of Antwerp in 1909, the Vega Medal in 1910, and the Boston Medal with bar in 1910.

On the Nimrod Expedition 1907-1909, Shackleton and three companions Frank Wild, Jameson Adams, and Eric Marshall reached 88°S, just 97 geographic miles from the South Pole, setting a new Farthest South record. His team also climbed Mount Erebus. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII upon his return.
