Gustaf Mannerheim

Finland

Gustaf Mannerheim served 30 years in the Russian Army, then led Finland as Commander-in-Chief during World War II. He was appointed Marshal of Finland on his 75th birthday in 1942. He served as President from 1944 to 1946. A 2004 public poll chose him as the greatest Finnish person ever.
