Who was Jacques Yves Cousteau?

BIOGRAPHY

Jacques Yves Cousteau — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

The car accident that ended Jacques Cousteau’s aviation career forced him to swim daily in the Mediterranean for rehabilitation. He had learned to swim at age four despite physical frailty. Jacques Cousteau, born June 11, 1910, in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, Gironde, France, entered the École Navale in 1930 and became a gunnery officer. In 1936, near Toulon, he first used goggles underwater, a moment that redirected his life. He partnered with engineer Émile Gagnan to co-invent the Aqualung in 1943.

Career

Cousteau co-invented the Aqua-Lung in 1943, enabling free underwater exploration. After World War II, he joined Philippe Tailliez and Frédéric Dumas as the mousquemers, conducting diving experiments. In 1950, he converted the minesweeper Calypso into a floating laboratory. His book The Silent World was published in 1953; he and Louis Malle turned it into a 1956 film that won the Palme d’Or and an Academy Award. In 1964, his film World Without Sun won a second Academy Award. From 1968, The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau aired on ABC, comprising over 115 television films. He also served as director of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco for thirty years.

Personal life

Cousteau married Simone Cousteau on July 12, 1937, and they had two sons, Jean-Michel and Philippe. She served as his partner on Calypso until her death in 1990. He later married Francine Triplet on June 28, 1991, who survived him. His youngest son Philippe, a filmmaker, died in a seaplane crash in 1979. He also had a daughter, Diane Cousteau, and a brother, journalist Pierre Antoine Cousteau. He lived aboard Calypso for much of his life, conducting expeditions around the world.

Legacy

Cousteau opened the oceans to millions, inspiring a generation of marine scientists. His Aqua-Lung became standard scuba gear. The TV series The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau influenced filmmakers like Wes Anderson, who parodied Cousteau in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. John Denver’s 1975 song Calypso celebrated Cousteau’s work. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985 and was elected to the Académie Française in 1989. His petition drive in 1990 led to international protection of Antarctica. Cousteau is remembered as the man who brought the ocean into the world’s living rooms.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
