BIOGRAPHY

Felix Kjellberg — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Felix Kjellberg, born on October 24, 1989 in Gothenburg to Lotta Kristine Johanna Kjellberg, attended Göteborgs Högre Samskola before studying at Chalmers University of Technology. Before YouTube, he worked on a tennis court and as a harbor captain, and played tennis, golf, and sailing. His early gaming, including Dead Space, influenced his future commentary.

Career

Kjellberg launched his YouTube channel under the alias PewDiePie in 2010, initially focusing on video game commentary. His breakthrough came on August 15, 2013, when his channel surpassed Smosh to become the most subscribed on YouTube. His outlandish editing style, profanity, and enthusiastic greetings made him a distinctive presence, especially playing indie games. In 2014, he promoted the horror film As Above, So Below by traveling through the Paris Catacombs and participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. He has collaborated with fellow YouTubers Cryaotic, Markiplier, CinnamonToastKen, and Jacksepticeye. His acting credits include voicing himself on South Park, appearing in Tomorrowland uncredited, and starring in the YouTube Red series Scare PewDiePie in 2016. He also cameoed in Epic Rap Battles of History as Mikhail Baryshnikov and appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In 2018, he appeared in the documentary A Self-Induced Hallucination.

Personal life

Kjellberg met Italian vlogger Marzia Bisognin after she emailed him praising his videos; he flew to Italy to meet her. They began living together in Sweden, then Italy, before settling in Brighton, England. The couple, often called YouTube’s biggest power couple, have two pugs named Maya and Edgar. In 2015, Kjellberg experienced a severe panic attack due to overwork and poor diet, causing him to take a year-long hiatus from his Pewds Does Everything series. He also plays guitar and is a fan of Radiohead, particularly their album In Rainbows.

Legacy

Surpassing Smosh in August 2013 made Kjellberg the first individual creator to hold the most-subscribed YouTube channel, a position he held for years. His Bro Army fanbase has rallied for charity, raising over $1 million combined for causes including children with cancer, clean drinking water, and school supplies. He popularized indie games through his Let’s Play videos, creating an Oprah effect on their sales. He has collaborated with and inspired creators like Jacksepticeye and Markiplier. He received the Red Diamond Creator Award and his legacy as YouTube’s first superstar remains unchallenged.
