Early life

Jamie Oliver was born on May 27, 1975, in Clavering, Essex, where his parents ran The Cricketers pub. By age 11, he could cut vegetables as well as any kitchen staff. He attended Newport Free Grammar School and later Westminster Kingsway College, earning a City & Guilds NVQ in home economics. He spent five years in special needs education due to dyslexia.

Career

While working as a pastry chef at Antonio Carluccio’s Neal’s Yard and later at The River Café, Jamie Oliver caught the BBC’s attention in 1997 after an unscripted documentary appearance. His show The Naked Chef debuted in 1999, and the companion cookbook became the UK’s number one bestseller. In 2000, he became the face of Sainsbury’s in a deal worth $2 million per year. In 2002, he founded the Fifteen charity restaurant. In 2005, his campaign Feed Me Better led to a government pledge to improve school meals. He won an Emmy Award and the TED Prize.

Personal life

Jamie Oliver married former model Juliette Norton in July 2000. They have five children: Poppy Honey 2002, Daisy Boo 2003, Petal Blossom Rainbow 2009, Buddy Bear Maurice 2010, and River Rocket 2016. The family lives in London, and Jamie travels by motorbike. He plays drums in a band called Scarlet Division with his high school friends.

Legacy

Jamie Oliver’s campaign Feed Me Better forced a government overhaul of UK school meals in 2005. His Fifteen charity restaurant model has expanded globally. He received the MBE in 2003 for services to hospitality. In 2010, he won the TED Prize for his wish to change American eating habits. As of 2016, he is the UK’s all-time best-selling non-fiction author. His straightforward cooking style and children’s health advocacy remain central to his legacy.
