Who is Gordon Ramsay?

BIOGRAPHY

Gordon Ramsay — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Gordon Ramsay was born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 8, 1966, but grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon, England after his family moved there when he was a boy. His father was a welder and his mother a nurse. A promising football career with Glasgow Rangers was cut short by a knee injury at age 19. That prompted him to enroll in a hotel management course at North Oxfordshire Academy.

After graduation, he trained under Albert Roux, Marco Pierre White, Guy Savoy, and Joël Robuchon. His training under those chefs shaped his exacting standards and fiery kitchen demeanor.

Career

In 1993, Ramsay became chef at Aubergine in London, earning two Michelin stars within three years. In 1998, at age 31, he opened his first wholly owned restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, which earned three Michelin stars by 2001. It remains London’s longest-running three-star restaurant.

He opened restaurants in Las Vegas including Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen at Caesars Palace and Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris Las Vegas, and ventures in Doha, Hong Kong, and Dubai. He began hosting Hell’s Kitchen in 2005, MasterChef in 2010, and MasterChef Junior, earning Emmy nominations. Through Studio Ramsay, he produces scripted and unscripted content, including Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch.

Personal life

Ramsay married Tana Ramsay in 1996, and they have five children: Megan born 1998, twins Holly and Jack 2000, Matilda 2002, and Oscar 2019. The family splits time between Los Angeles and London. He holds a black belt in karate, is a triathlete, and runs marathons. In 2016, the couple experienced a miscarriage; their daughter Megan ran a marathon in tribute.

He is fluent in French and close friends with David and Victoria Beckham. His hobbies include boxing and watching American Idol. He prefers contestants on his shows to call him Gordon rather than chef when outside the kitchen.

Legacy

Ramsay’s Restaurant Gordon Ramsay is London’s longest-running three-Michelin-starred restaurant. He is one of only four UK chefs to hold that rating. In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to the culinary arts. His TV shows Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef have been exported worldwide, and his joint venture with All3Media through Studio Ramsay develops new formats.

His explosive temper on screen and uncompromising pursuit of perfection inspired a generation of chefs and home cooks. The Gordon and Tana Ramsay Foundation, partnering with Great Ormond Street Hospital, supports children’s health.

Olivia has 6 years of experience writing biographical profiles and still approaches every subject like it's the first one. She covers everyone from debut musicians to Hall of Fame athletes to novelists most people have never heard of. She finds something worth reading in all of them. Her drafts tend to come in already clean, which her editor appreciates. She says good writing is just good thinking written down. Hard to argue with that.
