BIOGRAPHY

Steven Spielberg — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Steven Allan Spielberg created short films like Firelight 1964 and Amblin’ 1968 as a child, growing up in New Jersey, Arizona, and California. He was born on December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Leah Frances Posner, a concert pianist, and Arnold Spielberg, an electrical engineer. After being rejected by USC Cinema School, he attended California State University Long Beach but dropped out to pursue a career in entertainment. Sneaking onto the Universal Studios lot and befriending an editor helped launch his career.

Career

Spielberg’s first major theatrical film was The Sugarland Express 1974, but Jaws 1975 made him a star and launched the summer blockbuster tradition. He next directed Close Encounters of the Third Kind 1977, Raiders of the Lost Ark 1981, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 1982, which became the highest-grossing film at the time. In 1993, he released both Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List, winning the Best Director Oscar for the latter. Saving Private Ryan 1998 earned him another Best Director Oscar. He co-founded DreamWorks in 1994 and later directed Munich 2005 and Lincoln 2012.

Personal life

Spielberg married actress Amy Irving in 1985. They had a son, Max Spielberg, before divorcing in 1989. He married Kate Capshaw in 1991, with whom he has five children: Sasha, Sawyer, Destry, Theo adopted, and stepdaughter Jessica Capshaw from Capshaw’s previous marriage. The family resides in several homes, including a property in the Hamptons. Spielberg also adopted Theo before their marriage.

Legacy

Steven Spielberg has shaped popular cinema for over four decades. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the AFI Life Achievement Award, and an Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. His films have grossed billions globally. He has directed actors to Oscar wins, including Daniel Day-Lewis, Mark Rylance, and Ariana DeBose. He is best known for blockbusters such as Jaws and Schindler’s List.

Olivia has 6 years of experience writing biographical profiles and still approaches every subject like it's the first one. She covers everyone from debut musicians to Hall of Fame athletes to novelists most people have never heard of. She finds something worth reading in all of them. Her drafts tend to come in already clean, which her editor appreciates. She says good writing is just good thinking written down. Hard to argue with that.
