Early life

Ligeti began studying composition in 1941 under Ferenc Farkas. In 1943, Nazis arrested him for being Jewish and sentenced him to forced labor for the remainder of World War II. Nazis murdered his father Sándor Ligeti and brother. From 1945 to 1949, he continued his studies at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music under Farkas and Sándor Veress.

Career

Ligeti fled Hungary in late 1956. From 1957 to 1959, he worked at the WDR electronic music studio in Cologne, pioneering electronic music. He lectured at the Darmstadt Music Courses in the 1960s and served as a visiting professor at the Stockholm Music Academy. His breakthrough arrived with Atmosphères 1961. In 1968, Stanley Kubrick used that piece alongside Lontano and Requiem in 2001: A Space Odyssey without permission. Ligeti sued and settled for one dollar. In 1973 he became a professor of composition at the Hamburg Music Academy, where he remained until resigning due to illness in 1989.
