Early life

On September 28, 1987, Hilary Erhard Duff was born in Houston, Texas to Susan Duff née Cobb and Robert Erhard Duff, a partner in a convenience store chain. When she was six, she had been traveling in the Cechetti Ballet with her older sister Haylie Duff but decided she wanted to fulfill her dream of acting.

Her first starring role came when she played the young witch Wendy in Casper Meets Wendy 1998. After being dropped from the cast of Daddio 2000 before it aired, Duff was reluctant to pursue acting further, but a week later she landed the title role of a newly developed Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire 2001.

Career

Duff became a teen idol when she starred in the #1 hit Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire 2001. The show’s success led to the theatrical film The Lizzie McGuire Movie 2003 and a string of hit movies including Agent Cody Banks 2003, Cheaper by the Dozen 2003, A Cinderella Story 2004, Raise Your Voice 2004, and The Perfect Man 2005.

Duff stormed the music charts with singles So Yesterday and Come Clean. Her first album, Metamorphosis, debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 in 2003 and eventually ascended to #1, becoming the eighth best-selling album of 2003 in the United States. She released her fourth studio album Dignity in 2007 with Hollywood Records. In 2015, she released her fifth studio album Breathe In. Breathe Out. and began starring as Kelsey Peters in the TV series Younger 2015.

Personal life

Duff married ice hockey player Mike Comrie in a small private ceremony at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California on August 14, 2010. Her older sister Haylie served as maid of honor. The couple had a son, Luca Comrie, born March 20, 2012. After a year-long separation, Duff filed for divorce, which was finalized on February 2, 2016.

She married musician Matthew Koma on December 21, 2019 in their backyard in Los Angeles. Together they have three daughters: Banks Bair born October 25, 2018, Mae Bair born March 24, 2021, and Townes Meadow Bair born May 3, 2024. Duff has been diagnosed with hyperactive ADHD as a child and continues to take medication as an adult. She has involved herself with philanthropy, including donating $250,000 to Hurricane Katrina victims and distributing over 2.5 million meals.

Legacy

Hilary Duff defined teen entertainment in the early 2000s through her dual success as an actress and singer. The Lizzie McGuire series remains a nostalgic touchstone for millennials, and her debut album Metamorphosis was one of the best-selling albums of 2003.
