Who is Sean Combs?

BIOGRAPHY

Sean Combs — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Sean Combs graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx in 1987. He enrolled at Howard University to study business but left after a year to take an internship at Uptown Records.

His mother, Janice Combs, was a model. That summer internship turned into a full-time job, introducing him to the music industry.

Career

As an intern at Uptown Records, Combs helped launch Mary J. Blige and Jodeci. In 1993, he founded Bad Boy Entertainment as a 50/50 joint venture with Clive Davis. The label’s first release, The Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die, introduced a roster that included Faith Evans, 112, and Mase.

After The Notorious B.I.G.’s death in 1996, Combs released his debut solo album No Way Out in 1997, winning a Grammy. He continued scoring hits, including his 2022 single Gotta Move On with Bryson Tiller, his 11th number one. In 2023, he dropped the Love Album: Off the Grid on his new label Love Records, earning a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album.

His film debut came in 2001’s Monster’s Ball with Halle Berry. He played the lead in the 2007 Broadway revival of A Raisin in the Sun and starred in the comedy Get Him to the Greek in 2010. As a producer, he executive produced the Oscar-winning documentary Undefeated 2012 and the short film Two Distant Strangers, which won an Oscar in 2021.

Personal life

From 1994 to 2007, Combs had an on-again, off-again relationship with Kim Porter. They had children together, including son King Combs. He also has a son, Quincy, from a previous relationship. His mother, Janice Combs, was a model who supported his early career.

In 2003, Combs ran the New York City Marathon on his 34th birthday, raising money for charity despite minimal training. He has also been open about his fear of clowns. He reportedly insisted on a no-clowns clause in his contract for an appearance on Fear Factor.

Legacy

Sean Combs has won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album for No Way Out and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. In 2008, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The BET Awards honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. His business ventures, including Sean John, Ciroc Vodka, and Revolt TV, have made him one of the wealthiest figures in hip-hop, with a net worth estimated at $820 million by Forbes in 2017. In 2023, he made headlines by reassigning his Bad Boy publishing rights to the artists who helped build the label. He transformed hip-hop from a genre into a global business empire.

Olivia has 6 years of experience writing biographical profiles and still approaches every subject like it's the first one. She covers everyone from debut musicians to Hall of Fame athletes to novelists most people have never heard of. She finds something worth reading in all of them. Her drafts tend to come in already clean, which her editor appreciates. She says good writing is just good thinking written down. Hard to argue with that.
