Who was Hubert H. Humphrey?

BIOGRAPHY

Hubert H. Humphrey — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Hubert Horatio Humphrey was born on May 27, 1911, in Wallace, South Dakota, to Hubert Horatio Humphrey Sr., a pharmacist and local politician. He grew up in a family of Norwegian descent, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and commitment to public service. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, he earned a master’s degree from Louisiana State University and briefly taught political science before entering politics.

Career

Humphrey’s political career took off when he was elected mayor of Minneapolis in 1945, a position he held until he won a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1948. He established himself as a liberal leader, delivering a speech at the 1948 Democratic National Convention that called for a strong civil rights platform. In the Senate, he served as Assistant Majority Leader from 1961 and helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1964, he was elected vice president alongside President Lyndon Johnson. After his vice presidency, he ran for president in 1968 as the Democratic nominee, losing to Richard Nixon in a close election. He returned to the Senate in 1971 and served until his death in 1978.

Personal life

Humphrey married Muriel Buck on September 3, 1936, and they remained together until his death. They had four children: Nancy, Hubert III, Robert, and Douglas. Muriel later succeeded him in the Senate after his death. His warm, energetic personality earned him the nickname The Happy Warrior. He was a heavy smoker, which he believed contributed to his bladder cancer.

Legacy

Humphrey’s advocacy for civil rights and social justice defines his legacy. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and the Freedom Award. The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis was named in his honor. He is remembered as a progressive champion and a dedicated public servant who never lost his optimism, even in defeat.
