BIOGRAPHY

J. Edgar Hoover โ€” early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

John Edgar Hoover arrived in Washington, D.C., on January 1, 1895. He attended Cardozo Education Campus and later earned a law degree from George Washington University in 1917. He also studied at Georgetown University. His family background in the capital city shaped his career in law enforcement.

Career

In 1924, Hoover took charge of the Bureau of Investigation, the predecessor to the FBI. He founded the FBI in 1935 and led it for 37 years. He built a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories. He also created the FBI Index, a national blacklist. In 1959, he appeared as himself in the film The FBI Story.

Personal life

Never marrying, Hoover lived with his mother until her death. He enjoyed betting on horse races and often visited horse tracks. His birth certificate was not filed until 1938. He used the name J. Edgar to avoid confusion with another John Edgar Hoover who had bad credit. He kept files on political figures for leverage.

Legacy

Hoover’s legacy is complex. He transformed the FBI into a modern crime-fighting agency, but also used its power to blackmail political figures. After his death in 1972, President Nixon sealed his office. Hoover has been portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2011 film J. Edgar and by many other actors. He remains the longest-serving FBI director.
