Kern’s breakthrough came in 1914 with the song They Didn’t Believe Me from the show The Girl from Utah. He collaborated with British writers Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse on the Princess Theatre musicals, including Very Good, Eddie and Leave It To Jane, which featured everyday characters instead of operetta’s exotic figures.
His greatest triumph was Show Boat in 1927, adapted from Edna Ferber’s novel with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Despite skepticism, it became a hit with its realistic story and integrated songs like Ol Man River. After a heart attack in 1939, Kern focused on film musicals, producing hit songs for Swing Time 1936 and Cover Girl 1944.
