Who was Maria Schell?

BIOGRAPHY

Maria Schell — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

The family fled to Zurich, Switzerland after the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. Maria Schell, born in Vienna on January 15, 1926 to Swiss writer Hermann Ferdinand Schell and Austrian actress Margarete Schell Noé, studied at a religious institution in Colmar, France. She later trained in drama in Zurich, working as a secretary to fund her education.

Career

Schell’s breakthrough came in 1954 with Helmut Käutner’s The Last Bridge, a performance that earned her the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. She went on to star in acclaimed films such as Gervaise 1956 and White Nights 1957, winning the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for the latter. She also appeared in American productions like Voyage of the Damned 1976 and TV series including Kojak and Derrick.

Personal life

Schell married Horst Hächler in 1957; they divorced in 1965 after having a son, Oliver Schell. In 1966 she married actor and director Veit Relin, with whom she had a daughter, actress Marie Theres Relin; this marriage ended in divorce in 1986. Her siblings Immy, Carl, and Maximilian Schell also became actors.

Legacy

Maria Schell’s tragic heroine roles and distinctive smile under tears style made her one of the first movie idols of the post-war German-speaking world. The Austrian government issued a commemorative postage stamp in her honor on April 24, 2015. Her work influenced later German-language film stars.
