BIOGRAPHY

Matthew Perry — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

After his parents divorced, Matthew Perry was raised primarily by his mother Suzanne Langford in Ottawa, Ontario. There he became a top-ranked junior tennis player, reaching 17th nationally in singles and 3rd in doubles. At age 15, he moved to Los Angeles to live with his father, actor John Bennett Perry, and developed an interest in acting. He attended high school at the Buckley School and later graduated from Lisgar Collegiate Institute. He intended to study at USC but accepted a lead role on the TV series Boys Will Be Boys in 1987 instead. Perry was born on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Career

Perry’s breakout role came in 1994 when he was cast as Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom Friends, a role he played for ten seasons until 2004. The character became a cultural phenomenon, and Perry’s comedic timing earned him an Emmy nomination and multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards. During the Friends run, he appeared in films such as The Whole Nine Yards 2000, a comedy with Bruce Willis, and the romantic comedy Fools Rush In 1997. He also co-starred with Chris Farley in Almost Heroes 1998 and with Neve Campbell in Three to Tango 1999. After Friends, Perry took on dramatic and comedic roles in television, including a recurring role on The West Wing as Joe Quincy in 2003-2004, and leading roles in the short-lived series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip 2006, Mr. Sunshine 2011, and Go On 2012. He also appeared on The Good Wife as Mike Kresteva. Perry co-wrote and executive produced the TNT film The Ron Clark Story 2006, in which he also starred.

Personal life

Perry dated actress Julia Roberts from 1995 to 1996 and later had relationships with Neve Campbell from 1997 to 1998, Lauren Graham in 2003, and Lizzy Caplan from 2006 to 2012. He never married and had no children. His struggle with addiction began at age 14; by the late 1990s he was taking up to 55 Vicodin pills daily. He entered a 28-day rehab program in 1997 and later sought treatment for opioid and alcohol addiction. Perry estimated 65 detox visits and 6,000 AA meetings. In 2019, his colon burst, leading to a 14-day coma and five months in hospital. His mother married NBC newscaster Keith Morrison, and Perry had five half-siblings.

Legacy

Perry’s portrayal of Chandler Bing on Friends defined a generation of sitcom comedy. His character’s sarcastic wit and one-liners remain frequently quoted. In May 2013, he received the Champion of Recovery award from U.S. drug czar R. Gil Kerlikowske for his addiction advocacy. His 2022 memoir detailed his journey with addiction and recovery. Following his death in 2023, tributes from co-stars and fans highlighted his impact on television comedy and mental health awareness.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
