Melanija Knavs was born on April 26, 1970 in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, then part of Yugoslavia. She grew up in Sevnica and attended the Secondary School of Design and Photography in Ljubljana. After one year studying architecture and design at the University of Ljubljana, she left to pursue modeling in Europe, working in Paris and Milan before moving to New York.

Melania started modeling in Slovenia and across Europe, appearing in magazines such as GQ, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. In 1992, she was a finalist in the Elite Model Look contest. She transitioned to the US and continued modeling until her marriage to Donald Trump in 2005. On January 20, 2017, she became First Lady of the United States, a role she held until 2021. Her platform, Be Best, focused on children’s well-being and anti-bullying.

Melania married Donald Trump on January 22, 2005 in Palm Beach, Florida, in what was reported as the most expensive society wedding of the year. Their son Barron was born on March 20, 2006 in Manhattan. She has four stepchildren: Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Tiffany Trump. In 2006, she became a US citizen. Her parents, Amalija and Viktor Knavs, became US citizens in August 2018. In May 2018, she underwent an embolization procedure for a benign kidney condition.

Melania Trump is the only First Lady to have posed nude during her modeling career. She is the second foreign-born First Lady and the first naturalized US citizen to hold the position. Her reserved public demeanor earned her the nickname The Slovenian Sphinx. Her distinctive fashion sense and role as First Lady from 2017 to 2021 are what she is best remembered for.
