BIOGRAPHY

Selena Gomez — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Selena Gomez’s mother Mandy Teefey gave birth to her at age 16 in Grand Prairie, Texas on July 22, 1992. Her parents divorced when she was five, and she was raised primarily by her mother. Her parents named her Selena after the Tejano singer, who died in 1995.

Her mother is of part Italian ancestry and her father Ricardo Joel Gomez is of Mexican descent. She attended Danny Jones Middle School in Texas. She became interested in acting after watching her mother, and began auditioning for roles. In 2002, she landed a role on Barney & Friends alongside Demi Lovato, which sparked her acting career.

Career

In 2007, Gomez was cast as the lead role of Alex Russo on the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place. The show ran for four seasons and earned her multiple Teen Choice Awards. She also appeared in Another Cinderella Story 2008 and voiced a character in Horton Hears a Who! 2008.

In 2009, she formed the band Selena Gomez & The Scene and released their debut album Kiss and Tell, which peaked at #9 on the Billboard 200. She released two more albums with the band: A Year Without Rain 2010 and When the Sun Goes Down 2011. She also starred in films like Monte Carlo 2011, Spring Breakers 2012, and Hotel Transylvania 2012.

In 2013, she released her first solo album Stars Dance. The lead single Come & Get It became her first top ten entry on the Billboard Hot 100. She followed with Revival in 2015, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Her third solo album Rare arrived in 2020. For her role in Emilia Pérez, she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress.

Personal life

Selena Gomez has been open about her health struggles. On October 9, 2015, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with lupus and underwent chemotherapy. In 2013, she was hospitalized for exhaustion and food poisoning.

She dated Justin Bieber on and off from December 2010 to March 2018, and The Weeknd from January to October 2017. She is currently married to music producer Benny Blanco.

Her mother Mandy Teefey married Brian Teefey, and Gomez has two half-sisters: Gracie Elliot Teefey born 2013 and Victoria Gomez born 2014. She also had a half-sister who was miscarried in 2011. She owns six dogs named Chip, Willy, Fina, Wallace, Chaz, and Baylor.
