Who is Mitt Romney?

BIOGRAPHY

Mitt Romney — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

George W. Romney, who later became Michigan’s governor, and his wife Lenore had a son on March 12, 1947 in Detroit: Mitt Romney. He was named Willard Mitt after his father’s friend J. Willard Marriott and his father’s cousin, pro football player Milton Mitt Romney. Raised in a Mormon household, Romney attended Cranbrook Schools, a private prep school, where he was the lone Mormon student.

Career

In 1994, Romney ran as the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Ted Kennedy, losing with 41% to Kennedy’s 58% but with the smallest margin Kennedy had ever faced. He took a leave from business in 2002 to lead the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympics, turning a $400 million deficit into a $100 million surplus. That same year, he was elected Governor of Massachusetts, serving from 2003 to 2007. His signature achievement was signing a universal health insurance law. He sought the presidency in 2008, losing the nomination to John McCain, and again in 2012, winning the Republican nomination but losing the general election to Barack Obama. Since 2019, he has served as a U.S. Senator from Utah.

Personal life

Romney married his high school sweetheart Ann Davies in 1969. They have five sons: Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben, and Craig. He served as a Mormon missionary in France for two and a half years in the 1960s and speaks French. His father George Romney also was a prominent Mormon and served in President Richard Nixon’s cabinet. Romney has been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life.

Legacy

Romney’s most lasting legacy may be the Massachusetts healthcare reform law, which served as a model for the Affordable Care Act. His rescue of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics is taught as a case study at Harvard Business School. He received the Profile in Courage Award for his role. As a U.S. Senator, he has been a rare Republican willing to break party ranks, notably voting to convict President Donald Trump in both impeachment trials. He is most remembered as the 2012 Republican presidential nominee who challenged Barack Obama.
