In Congress, he compiled a conservative voting record. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush appointed Cheney as Secretary of Defense, a role he held through the Gulf War. After leaving the Pentagon, Cheney became CEO of Halliburton Corporation, a position he held until 2000. In 2000, Cheney led the search for George W. Bush’s vice presidential candidate and was himself selected. Cheney served as Vice President from 2001 to 2009 and shaped the administration’s response to the September 11 attacks, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Personal life

Cheney suffered four heart attacks, underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 1988, had a pacemaker fitted in 2001, and received a heart transplant on March 24, 2012, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia.

Prior to the 2000 election, Cheney lived in Texas but changed his residency to Wyoming to comply with the 12th Amendment.
