Who is Nancy Sinatra?

BIOGRAPHY

Nancy Sinatra — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Nancy Sandra Sinatra was born on June 8, 1940 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the first child of Frank Sinatra and Nancy Barbato Sinatra. She attended University High School in West Hollywood, where she was a member of the close-harmony singing group The Tri-Tones with Jane Ross and Belinda Burrell. Her early exposure to show business came through her father’s fame; she made her first television appearance with him and Elvis Presley in 1959.

Career

Nancy Sinatra began her recording career in 1961 with the debut single Cuff Links and a Tie Clip. Her breakthrough came in 1965 with These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, which featured a prominent double bass line by Chuck Berghofer and rhythm guitar by Carol Kaye of the Wrecking Crew. The song reached number one on the US charts in 1966. She followed with hits like Sugar Town and How Does That Grab You, Darlin’? In 1967, she recorded the duet Somethin’ Stupid with her father Frank Sinatra, which also topped the charts. That same year, she sang the title track for the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, written by John Barry and Leslie Bricusse. Sinatra acted in films such as For Those Who Think Young 1964 and Get Yourself a College Girl 1964, and co-starred with Elvis Presley in Speedway 1968. She collaborated extensively with Lee Hazlewood, who wrote many of her songs and performed duets with her. In the 1970s, she covered songs by Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, Lynsey de Paul, and Roy Wood. After a period of relative quiet, she experienced a resurgence in the 2000s, helped by the successful re-recording of Somethin’ Stupid by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman.

Personal life

Nancy Sinatra married Tommy Sands in 1960; the marriage ended in divorce in 1965. She then married Hugh Lambert in 1970, and they remained together until his death in 1985. She has two daughters: A.J. Lambert and photographer Amanda Lambert born March 17, 1976. Her daughter A.J. gave birth to a granddaughter, Miranda Vega, on May 26, 2013. Sinatra’s siblings are Frank Sinatra Jr. and Tina Sinatra. She was once engaged to Jack Haley Jr. and was stepdaughter to her father’s wives Ava Gardner, Mia Farrow, and Barbara Sinatra.

Legacy

Nancy Sinatra defined the sound of the 1960s with her signature song These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, which became an enduring anthem. She became the first American singer to perform a James Bond theme song with You Only Live Twice in 1967. Her duet Somethin’ Stupid remains the only father-daughter duet to top the charts. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in 2002. Her music continues to be sampled and covered, and she is celebrated as a style icon and pop culture figure.
