BIOGRAPHY

Nikola Tesla — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

In 1856, Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan near Gospic, in the Croatian Military Frontier of the Austrian Empire now Croatia. His father, Milutin Tesla, was a Serbian Orthodox priest, and his mother, Đuka Mandic, was known for her mechanical skill despite being illiterate. He had one sibling, sister Marica Kosanović. Tesla studied at the Karlovac Gymnasium and later at the Graz University of Technology and Charles University. He never received a degree. His early career involved working in telephony and at Continental Edison in the early 1880s, gaining practical experience in the electric power industry.

Career

In 1884, Tesla emigrated to the United States and briefly worked at the Edison Machine Works in New York City. He soon left. To develop his own ideas, he partnered with investors. In 1888, his alternating current induction motor and poly-phase AC patents were licensed by Westinghouse Electric, providing significant income and becoming the foundation of the poly-phase system. Throughout the 1890s, Tesla conducted high-voltage, high-frequency experiments in New York and Colorado Springs, including work on wireless lighting and power distribution. In 1893, he demonstrated wireless communication possibilities. His ambitious Wardenclyffe Tower project, intended for intercontinental wireless transmission, ran out of funding before completion. After Wardenclyffe, Tesla continued to invent in the 1910s and 1920s with less success.

Personal life

Tesla never married and had no documented romantic relationships. He was known for his obsessive-compulsive disorder, which included a fixation on the number three, extreme germophobia, and refusal to shake hands. He lived in a series of New York hotels, including the Wyndham New Yorker where he died. His father instilled a strong aversion to war, leading to later inventions like a particle beam weapon. Tesla was a polyglot, fluent in English, French, German, Italian, Czech, Hungarian, and Latin. He was good friends with author Mark Twain.

Legacy

Tesla’s work fell into relative obscurity after his death until the 1960 General Conference on Weights and Measures named the SI unit of magnetic flux density the tesla in his honor. Since the 1990s, popular interest has surged. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1975. Belgrade’s airport was renamed Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport in 2006. His image appears on the 100 Serbian dinar banknote. Tesla Motors, founded in 2003, is named after him. He is remembered for revolutionizing the electrical power system with alternating current.
