Early life

Edinburgh, Scotland, welcomed Alexander Graham Bell on March 3, 1847, born to Eliza Bell and Alexander Melville Bell, a noted elocutionist. He attended Royal High School, the University of Edinburgh, and University College London, following his father’s path in speech and hearing. Bell adopted the middle name Graham out of admiration for a family friend, Alexander Graham.

Career

Bell’s career breakthrough came with the invention of the telephone in 1876. He founded AT&T on March 3, 1885. Bell served as a Professor of Vocal Physiology and Elocution at Boston University’s School of Oratory. Later, he formed the Aerial Experiment Association with Glenn Curtiss in 1907 and developed the world’s first metal detector in 1881 to locate the bullet in President James A. Garfield.

Personal life

Bell married Mabel Hubbard on July 11, 1877. They had two daughters: Elsie May Grosvenor and Marian Fairchild. He became a US citizen in 1882. Bell died at his estate in Baddeck, Nova Scotia on August 2, 1922.

Legacy

Bell’s invention of the telephone revolutionized global communication. Inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1965, and the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame in 2016, his telephone remains his most recognized achievement, commercialized by AT&T, alongside his contributions to aviation and metal detection.
