Who was River Phoenix?

BIOGRAPHY

River Phoenix — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Arlyn and John Lee Phoenix, itinerant fruit pickers, welcomed their third child—River Jude Bottom—in a log cabin in Madras, Oregon, on August 23, 1970. They later joined the Children of God religious group and moved to South America, where John became Archbishop of Venezuela. By age two, the family had relocated to South America, returning to the US and changing the surname to Phoenix. They settled in Florida and eventually Los Angeles, with parents encouraging all five children to pursue acting. At age ten, River was working professionally on television.

Career

River Phoenix made his film debut in Explorers 1985. A year later, he played Chris Chambers in Stand by Me 1986, his breakout role, then appeared opposite Harrison Ford in The Mosquito Coast 1986. In 1988, he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Danny Pope in Running on Empty. He played young Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1989 and gave his most praised performance as Mike Waters, a narcoleptic hustler, in My Own Private Idaho 1991. He also starred in Sneakers 1992 and was filming Dark Blood when he died. Phoenix played guitar and wrote songs for his band Aleka’s Attic.

Personal life

A strict vegetarian and animal-rights activist, Phoenix was a member of PeTA. He disliked flying, preferring to travel by car or train. He was best friends with Keanu Reeves and had a close bond with Harrison Ford. At the time of his death, he was dating actress Samantha Mathis. He was also a chain smoker despite his healthy reputation. His family includes siblings Joaquin, Rain, Liberty, Summer, and Jodean, and his brother Joaquin is also an Oscar-nominated actor.

Legacy

River Phoenix’s legacy endures through his performances and the artistic tributes they inspired. R.E.M. dedicated their 1994 album Monster to him, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicated the song Transcending on One Hot Minute. Gus Van Sant, who directed him in My Own Private Idaho, later dedicated a novel and a film to him. He and his brother Joaquin are the first brothers nominated for acting Oscars. Originally cast as Jack Dawson in Titanic, the role went to Leonardo DiCaprio. His final film, Dark Blood, was released posthumously in 2012. His performance in My Own Private Idaho remains a touchstone of independent cinema.
