Who is Mark Wahlberg?

BIOGRAPHY

Mark Wahlberg — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg was born June 5, 1971 in the working-class Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, the youngest of nine children. His parents, Alma Elaine Donnelly and Donald Edward Wahlberg, divorced when he was eleven, leading to a turbulent adolescence. He dropped out of Snowden International School at age fourteen and became involved in petty crime and drug dealing. At sixteen, he was convicted of assault for attacking two Vietnamese men and served 50 days in prison. He later credited his jail time for motivating him to change his life.

Career

His music career began as a member of New Kids on the Block, but he left before their breakthrough. He later formed Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, releasing the hit debut album Music for the People in 1991. His bad-boy image landed him a Calvin Klein underwear modeling contract in the early 1990s. After his music career declined, he transitioned to acting, earning acclaim in Renaissance Man 1994 and The Basketball Diaries 1995. His breakthrough role came as Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights 1997, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. He received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Departed 2006. He also starred in The Fighter 2010 and the comedy Ted 2012. As a producer, he executive produced the television series Boardwalk Empire 2010, In Treatment 2008, and Entourage 2004.

Personal life

He married longtime girlfriend Rhea Durham on August 1, 2009 in a private Catholic ceremony in Beverly Hills, California. The couple have four children: daughter Ella Rae born September 2, 2003, sons Michael born March 21, 2006 and Brendan Joseph born September 16, 2008, and daughter Grace Margaret born January 11, 2010. He has spoken about his close relationship with his mother Alma, whom he moved to a Beverly Hills mansion after his success. His father, Donald E. Wahlberg Sr., passed away on February 14, 2008.

Legacy

Mark Wahlberg is one of the few entertainers to successfully transition from teen pop idol to Oscar-nominated actor. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on July 29, 2010 at 6259 Hollywood Boulevard. His production company has created hit series like Entourage, which was inspired by his own Hollywood experiences. His philanthropic efforts include opening a restaurant that serves affordable meals reminiscent of his childhood. He is remembered for his versatile film career, from dramatic roles in The Departed and The Fighter to comedic turns in Ted.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
