Early life

At age 5, in 1981, Milla Jovovich emigrated from the Soviet Union, moving first to London, then to Sacramento, California, and finally settling in Los Angeles. She was born on December 17, 1975, in Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR, to a Serbian father, Bogdan Jovovich, a medical doctor, and a Russian mother, Galina Jovovich, an actress. Her parents worked as house cleaners for director Brian De Palma. Her father was later arrested and spent several years in prison, leading to her parents’ divorce. She was raised by her single mother. Bullied at school for being from the Soviet Union amid Cold War tensions, she studied music, ballet, and acting in Los Angeles, coached by her mother.

Career

Milla Jovovich made her acting debut in the Disney Channel movie The Night Train to Kathmandu 1988 and appeared on Married… with Children 1989. At age 12, she made her film debut in Two Moon Junction 1988. Her role in Return to the Blue Lagoon 1991 brought wider attention. In 1997, she co-starred opposite Bruce Willis in The Fifth Element as Leeloo, a role that defined her early film career. She played Joan of Arc in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc 1999. Starting in 2002, she led the Resident Evil franchise as Alice, reprising the role in five sequels through 2016. She also starred in Ultraviolet 2006 and Zoolander 2001. In 2005, she launched the Jovovich-Hawk clothing line with Carmen Hawk, featured in American Vogue. She released her debut album The Divine Comedy with EMI in 1994.

Personal life

Milla Jovovich married actor Shawn Andrews in 1992 in Las Vegas when she was 16, but the marriage was annulled by her mother. She then married director Luc Besson from 1997 to 2000. In 2002, she began a relationship with director Paul W.S. Anderson, marrying him on August 22, 2009. They have three daughters: Ever Anderson born November 3, 2007, Dashiel Edan born April 1, 2015, and Osian Lark Elliot born February 2, 2020. She divides her time between New York City and Los Angeles. She practices yoga and meditation and writes a private diary. She has a half-brother, Marco.

Legacy

Milla Jovovich remains best known as Alice in the Resident Evil franchise, portraying the zombie-slaying heroine across six films from 2002 to 2016. Her role as Leeloo in The Fifth Element 1997 is a cult favorite. Interview magazine named her one of the Twenty Most Beautiful People of the Decade in 2009. As a supermodel, she appeared on over 100 magazine covers and was the face of Calvin Klein’s Obsession and Christian Dior’s Poison.
