Early life

From her farmhouse in Plains, Georgia, Rosalynn Smith grew up as a neighbor of the Carter family. Born August 18, 1927 to Wilburn Edgar Smith and Allie Murray Smith, farmers, she attended Georgia Southwestern State University before marrying Jimmy Carter in 1946.

Career

Rosalynn Carter became first lady of the United States in 1977. She attended cabinet meetings and championed mental health legislation. She appeared in documentaries like Intimate Portrait and Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains. For her humanitarian work, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and other honors.

Personal life

Rosalynn Carter married Jimmy Carter on July 7, 1946. They raised four children: Jack, James Earl III, Jeff, and Amy. The family made their home in Plains, Georgia, while Jimmy Carter served in the Navy and later in state politics. Rosalynn advised her husband closely during his political career. She died in the same town she was born, Plains, Georgia, on November 19, 2023, after living with dementia.

Legacy

Rosalynn Carter was the first first lady since Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis who had not served as second lady. The National Women’s Hall of Fame inducted her, and she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Mental health advocacy and her 77-year partnership with Jimmy Carter define her legacy. She died in 2023 at age 96.
