Salvador Allende grew up in Valparaíso, where his father practiced law. Born June 26, 1908, in Santiago de Chile to Salvador Allende Castro and Laura Gossens Uribe, he attended the Instituto Nacional General José Miguel Carrera before studying medicine at the University of Chile. His medical practice exposed him to social inequalities, which cemented his socialist convictions.

Allende entered politics as a deputy from 1937 to 1939. President Pedro Aguirre Cerda appointed him Minister of Health in 1939, where he worked on labor reforms. He served as a senator from 1945, becoming President of the Senate in 1966. In 1970, he won the presidency as the Popular Unity coalition’s candidate. His government nationalized copper mines and expanded land reform, drawing fierce opposition. The United States supported strikes and the military, leading to the September 11, 1973 coup. Allende died that day, reportedly by suicide.

Allende married Hortensia Allende on March 17, 1940. They had two daughters: Beatriz 1943–1977 and María Isabel born 1945. His sister Laura Allende was also active in politics. His niece, novelist Isabel Allende, is his brother’s daughter. After the coup, his family was forced into exile.

Salvador Allende remains a divisive but powerful figure. As the first democratically elected Marxist head of state, his presidency inspired leftists globally. A statue of Allende stands outside La Moneda Palace, and streets in Málaga, Zaragoza, and Getafe carry his name. Squares in Barcelona, Valencia, and Paris also commemorate him. He received the Lenin Peace Prize and other posthumous honors. Allende is remembered as a socialist martyr and a symbol of defiance against authoritarian rule.
