Vivienne Westwood did not enter fashion until she was 30, despite an early interest in art and design. Born 8 April 1941 in Glossop, Derbyshire, she attended Glossopdale School and later studied at Middlesex University and the University of Westminster.

Vivienne Westwood’s career in fashion began in the 1970s alongside Malcolm McLaren, with whom she had a son, Joseph Corré. She opened the boutique SEX on King’s Road, London, which became a hub for punk fashion. In film, she designed costumes for Leaving Las Vegas 1995 and Shadowboxer 2005. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1992 and Dame Commander in 2006. She also designed Dita Von Teese’s wedding dress for her marriage to Marilyn Manson.

Vivienne Westwood married Derek Westwood in 1962, with whom she had a son, Ben Westwood. The marriage ended in divorce in 1966. She then entered a long-term relationship with Malcolm McLaren from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s, resulting in a second son, Joseph Corré, who later co-founded Agent Provocateur. In 1992, she married Andreas Kronthaler, who remained her husband until her death. She was the former mother-in-law of Serena Rees.

Gwen Stefani referenced Westwood in the song Rich Girl. Westwood’s costume designs for films and her runway shows challenged conventional fashion. She received the Berliner Bär and European Cultural Award. The Royal Designer for Industry award recognized her influence on fashion.
