BIOGRAPHY

Prince William of Wales — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Prince William Arthur Philip Louis was born on June 21, 1982 at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, the first British prince born in a hospital at his mother Princess Diana’s insistence. He attended nursery at Mrs. Maynard Academy and, at age eight, began Wetherby School before moving to Ludgrove boarding school 25 miles from London. His parents separated when he was ten and divorced when he was 14, and his mother’s death in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997 shaped him. At 13, he enrolled at Eton College, an all-boys school near Windsor Castle, where he later became Joint Keeper of swimming and secretary of the Agricultural Society.

Career

After Eton, Prince William took a gap year working with the Raleigh charity in poorer communities. In 2001, he entered the University of St Andrews, graduating in 2005 with an upper second class degree in History of Art — the highest academic record of any royal heir. Following university, he trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and qualified as a helicopter pilot at the Defence Helicopter Flying School. After his marriage in 2011, Queen Elizabeth II granted him the titles Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus. When the Queen died on September 8, 2022, he became Prince of Wales and first in line to the throne.

Personal life

Prince William married Catherine Middleton on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey in a ceremony costing $34 million. He proposed in October 2010 during a holiday in Kenya, using his mother’s engagement ring without first asking her father’s permission. The couple has three children: Prince George born 2013, Princess Charlotte born 2015, and Prince Louis born 2018. William has remained protective of his younger brother Harry since their mother’s death. He enjoys playing tennis with his wife and riding his 600cc Triumph Daytona motorcycle.

Legacy

His enrollment at the University of St Andrews prompted a 44% increase in applications. He holds the highest academic degree of any heir to the throne and speaks French, Latin, and some Spanish and Welsh. As a working royal, he has championed environmental causes and mental health awareness. After Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022, he became first in line to the British throne, a position he will hold until his accession, likely as King William V.

A wall of memorable lines from Prince William of Wales — lyrics, interviews, and off-the-cuff remarks captured over a lifetime.

  • The Thing Is with Me, I Look on the Brighter Side of Everything. There’s No Point Being Pessimistic or Being Worried About Too Many Things Because Frankly Life’s Too Short.

  • The Last Thing I Want to Do Is Be Mollycoddled or Wrapped up in Cotton Wool, Because If I Was to Join the Army, I Would Want to Go Where My Men Went, and I’d Want to Do What They Did. I Would Not Want to Be Kept Back for Being Precious, or Whatever That’s the Last Thing I Would Want.

  • I’m Very Much the Person Who Doesn’t Want to Rush into Anything Without Really Thinking It Through. I Don’t Shy Away from Doing Particular Events but I Do Like to Go to the Ones That I Really Feel Passionately About.

  • I Like the Challenge…It’s More Responsibility Looking After Two Little Ones, Especially When George Is Around, as He’s a Little Monkey.

  • Growing Up, Having My Cousins Sat Opposite Me Has Always Been Quite Difficult to Keep a Straight Face at Times. I Have Had the Giggles Many, Many Times in the Service.
