Who is Bill Gates?

BIOGRAPHY

Bill Gates — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

The nickname Trey came from his III suffix. Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, to attorney Bill Gates Sr. and teacher Mary Maxwell Gates. At Lakeside School, a private prep school, he excelled in math, science, English literature, and drama. The Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969 sparked his interest in computers. Lakeside acquired a computer terminal, and Gates spent hours programming. He met Paul Allen, who shared his passion. Together they wrote the Altair BASIC interpreter in 1975, prompting Gates to drop out of Harvard to co-found Microsoft.

Career

Altair BASIC debuted in 1975 for the MITS Altair 8800, Microsoft’s first product. In 1979, Microsoft moved to Bellevue, Washington. The 1981 IBM partnership gave rise to MS-DOS. Gates licensed it to IBM while retaining ownership, earning royalties per computer. By 1985, Microsoft had $140 million in sales. Windows launched in 1986 and became the most used operating system. Gates became a billionaire at 31. A 1998 antitrust lawsuit accused Microsoft of monopolistic practices; Gates stepped down as CEO in 2000. He remained chairman. Windows 95 sold millions, and Internet Explorer later faced off against Netscape. Gates left Microsoft’s board in 2020 to focus on philanthropy.

Personal life

On January 1, 1994, Bill Gates married Melinda French in Lanai, Hawaii. Guests included Warren Buffett and Paul Allen. The couple has three children: Jennifer, born 1996; Rory, born 1999; and Phoebe, born 2002. Mary Gates, his mother, died of breast cancer shortly after the wedding, influencing his philanthropic focus. Gates owns Xanadu, a 66,000-square-foot mansion in Medina, Washington, and cars including a Porsche 959 and a Porsche Taycan. An arrest in 1977 for driving without a license rounds out his personal history.

Legacy

Personal computing changed with Microsoft. Gates made computers accessible to homes and businesses worldwide. Through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he has donated billions to global health, education, and poverty alleviation. President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. An honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire came in 2005. Gates has been the richest person in the world for most years since 1998. His vision of a computer on every desk and in every home summarizes his lasting impact.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
