Early life

At age 18, William Wyler emigrated from Alsace to the United States after his mother’s cousin, Universal Pictures founder Carl Laemmle, offered him a job. Born Willi Wyler on July 1, 1902, in Mulhouse, then part of Germany, he was the son of Leopold, a haberdasher, and Melanie, a German-born cousin of Laemmle. His mother often took him and his older brother Robert to concerts, opera, and theatre, and the family staged amateur theatricals at home. These early exposures to performance and cinema shaped his future career.

Career

Wyler received his first Best Director Oscar for Mrs. Miniver 1942, a propaganda film that also won Best Picture. He pioneered deep-focus cinematography with Gregg Toland on films like Dodsworth 1936 and Wuthering Heights 1939.
