Who is Ashley Judd?

BIOGRAPHY

Ashley Judd — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Ashley Tyler Ciminella was born on April 19, 1968, in Granada Hills, California, to country singer Naomi Judd and marketing specialist Michael Ciminella. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she moved frequently, attending twelve schools in thirteen years before college. She enrolled at the University of Kentucky, majoring in French and minoring in anthropology and other subjects, but left in 1990 just shy of graduation to pursue acting in Hollywood.

Career

Judd’s first screen kiss was with Wil Wheaton on Star Trek: The Next Generation 1987, where she played Ensign Robin Lefler. She turned down a larger role in Kuffs 1992 due to requested nudity, saying, My mother worked too hard for me to take my clothes off in my first movie. Her film breakthrough came with Heat 1995 as Charlene Shiherlis. She starred in thrillers Kiss the Girls 1997 and Double Jeopardy 1999, both opposite Morgan Freeman. In 2002 she played both a teenager and a 30-year-old in Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. She also voiced roles in Dolphin Tale 2011 and its sequel.

Personal life

Judd married Scottish racing driver Dario Franchitti on December 12, 2001, at Skibo Castle in Scotland. They divorced in January 2013. She has no children. In 2006 she spent 47 days in a Texas rehab center for depression. In March 2015 she wrote an article revealing she was raped by two adult family members as a child. On February 13, 2021, while in Africa studying bonobos, she shattered her leg and endured a 55-hour ordeal to reach a hospital in South Africa.

Legacy

Judd’s decision to go public with her allegations against Harvey Weinstein in 2017 made her a pivotal figure in the #MeToo movement. She has testified before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on sexual violence and AIDS, and served as a Global Ambassador for YouthAIDS. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky in 2007, 17 years after leaving, and a Mid-Career MPA from Harvard in 2010. She is remembered as an actress who balanced a major film career with outspoken humanitarian activism.
