BIOGRAPHY

Aaliyah — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York, to Diane and Michael Haughton. Her uncle was music manager Barry Hankerson, and her brother is director Rashad Haughton. When she was five years old, the family moved to Detroit, Michigan. At age 11, she appeared on the syndicated television series Star Search, where she sang My Funny Valentine, a song her mother had sung years earlier. She also performed with Gladys Knight for five nights in Las Vegas. Aaliyah attended the Detroit School of Arts, where she majored in dance, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

Career

Aaliyah met singer and composer R. Kelly, who produced her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, released in 1994 when she was 15. The album included the hit Back and Forth and launched her career. During her senior year, she recorded One in a Million 1996, featuring songwriting and production from Missy Elliott and Timbaland; it became a major success. In 1997, she recorded Journey to the Past for the Anastasia soundtrack. Film producer Joel Silver saw her at an awards show and in the video for Are You That Somebody? from Doctor Dolittle 1998 and asked her to audition for Romeo Must Die 2000, in which she played Trish O’Day. The film was a box office hit. She then starred as Akasha in Queen of the Damned 2002 and was cast as Zee in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. In July 2001, she released her self-titled third album Aaliyah, which debuted at number two on the Billboard charts. The single Try Again earned her a Grammy nomination and several MTV Video Music Awards.

Personal life

Aaliyah was married to R. Kelly when she was 15 and he was 27; the marriage was annulled due to her status as a minor. Later, she was in a relationship with Roc-A-Fella co-CEO Damon Dash, with whom she planned to wed before her death. She was close friends with Missy Elliott, Beyoncé, and Nicole Richie. Aaliyah had a brother, Rashad Haughton, who became a director. She was of African-American and Native American Oneida descent. Her mother Diane gave up a promising singing career to raise Aaliyah and her brother.

Legacy

Aaliyah’s career was brief but influential. She won multiple awards, including MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video and Best Video from a Film, an American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Album, and a NAACP Image Award. Her song Try Again was the most viewed music video of 2000-2001. In 2002, her single More Than a Woman reached number one in the UK posthumously. She is remembered for her soubrette soprano voice, innovative R&B style, and visually striking music videos. Her name in Arabic means highest, most exalted one, reflecting her impact. Aaliyah inspired countless artists and remains a beloved figure in music and film.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
