Who is Alan Alda?

BIOGRAPHY

Alan Alda — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Alan Alda, born Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo, came into the world in Manhattan, New York City in 1936. His father Robert Alda was a vaudeville and burlesque performer, and the family traveled frequently. At age seven, Alda contracted polio and underwent painful treatment with hot woolen blankets, which helped him recover mobility. He attended Archbishop Stepinac High School, an all-boys Catholic school, and later Fordham University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1956. In college, he worked for student radio station WFUV and joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

Career

In 1972, Alda was cast as Hawkeye Pierce in MASH, a role he played for all 256 episodes. He won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and later won Emmys for writing and directing, becoming the first person to win all three categories for the same series. After MASH ended in 1983, Alda wrote and directed several films, including The Four Seasons 1981 and Sweet Liberty 1986. In 2004, he portrayed Senator Owen Brewster in The Aviator, earning his first Oscar nomination. He played Senator Arnold Vinick on The West Wing 2004-2006, winning an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He later appeared in the crime drama Ray Donovan 2018-2020 and had recurring roles on The Blacklist.

Personal life

Alda married Arlene Weiss, a clarinetist, on March 15, 1957. They have three daughters: Eve born 1958, Elizabeth 1960, and Beatrice 1961. For 11 years while filming MASH, Alda commuted from his home in New Jersey to Los Angeles every weekend to keep his family together. In 2015, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which he publicly disclosed in 2018. He continues to act and write despite the diagnosis.

Legacy

Alda changed television by insisting that each episode of MASH include a scene in the operating room to show the horrors of war. He became the first person to win Emmys for acting, writing, and directing. He hosted Scientific American Frontiers from 1993 to 2005, inspiring a generation of science enthusiasts. He received the NAS Public Welfare Medal in 2010 and was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2013. His role as Hawkeye Pierce defined his career.
