Who is Alice Cooper?

BIOGRAPHY

Alice Cooper — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 4, 1948, Vincent Damon Furnier moved to Phoenix, Arizona, at a young age. His father was a minister, and he attended Cortez High School, graduating in 1966. At age 17, he formed a rock band called the Earwigs, which evolved into the Spiders, the Nazz, and finally the Alice Cooper band. The original lineup included Dennis Dunaway, Michael Bruce, Glen Buxton, and Neal Smith. The band’s name was chosen randomly for its twisted innocence, fitting their macabre stage theatrics.

Career

The Alice Cooper band got their first big break playing at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles in 1969, where Frank Zappa discovered them and signed them to his record label. After two albums and a move to Detroit, they signed with Warner Bros., connected with producer Robert Ezrin, and released the breakthrough album Love It to Death in 1971. Follow-up albums Killer 1971, ‘School’s Out’ 1972, Billion Dollar Babies 1973, and Muscle of Love 1974 became massive hits. The band appeared in the film Diary of a Mad Housewife 1970 and the documentary Good to See You Again, Alice Cooper 1974.

The original band dissolved in 1975, after which Furnier legally changed his name to Alice Cooper and released the solo album Welcome to My Nightmare 1975, accompanied by a theatrical tour where he met future wife Sheryl Cooper. He struggled with alcoholism but sobered up permanently in 1981, releasing albums like Trash 1989 featuring the hit Poison. Cooper also appeared in films such as ‘Wayne’s World’ 1992, ‘Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare’ 1991, and Prince of Darkness 1987. In 2015, he formed the band Hollywood Vampires with Joe Perry and Johnny Depp.

Personal life

Alice Cooper married dancer Sheryl Cooper in 1976; they have three children: Calico born 1981, Dashiell born 1984, and Sonora Rose born 1993. Despite his onstage horror image, Cooper is a devout Christian and attends church every Sunday. He is president of the Solid Rock Foundation, a Christian nonprofit that helps troubled teenagers. He struggled with alcoholism but quit drinking in 1981 and has remained sober. He also collects cars and antique watches and is an avid golfer.

Legacy

Alice Cooper blended horror theatrics with rock music to create shock rock, earning him the title Godfather of Shock Rock. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 14, 2011, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. His influence extends to musicians like Dave Mustaine, whose child he is godfather to, and bands like They Might Be Giants, who wrote a song about him. He continues to tour and perform, maintaining his legacy as a pioneering showman. Cooper is best remembered for his theatrical concerts and the anthemic song ‘School’s Out’.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
