Initially misreported as Paris or Strasbourg, Anthony Bourdain died in the small town of Kaysersberg, Haut-Rhin, France, which is also the birthplace of Nobel Peace Prize recipient Albert Schweitzer. Public Prosecutor Christian de Rocquigny du Fayel from Colmar confirmed Bourdain died by hanging at the luxury hotel Le Chambard. His close friend, chef Eric Ripert, discovered his body.

Among the weirdest delicacies Bourdain consumed were balut, a developing bird embryo boiled and eaten from the shell; raw seal eyeball, sampled with Inuits in Canada; roasted sheep’s testicles in a Moroccan desert; bull’s penis and testicles; hákarl, a heavily ammoniated fermented shark; cobra heart, sliced from a live snake and eaten beating; maggot fried rice; and warthog anus, which he called the worst meal of his life, eaten with a tribe in Namibia.

Anthony Bourdain’s father had French and some Spanish ancestry, with family roots in Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. His mother was of Ukrainian Jewish and Austrian Jewish descent.

Bourdain and his wife Ottavia welcomed their daughter Ariane on April 9, 2007. She weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces at birth.

On BBC’s Breakfast in 2010, Bourdain surprised hosts Bill Turnbull and Susanna Reid by revealing his all-time favorite restaurant was the British St. John in London’s Smithfield district, run by his friend chef Fergus Henderson.
